Frequent Questions

Where can I find more information on endangered species?

A brief introduction to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) is available from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service: ESA Basics: 40 Years of Conserving Endangered Species.

More detailed information, including species currently or previously listed as endangered, is available from the Fish & Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Service.

The Endangered Species Act requires that all federal agencies, including EPA, make sure that any action they authorize, fund or carry out won’t jeopardize the existence of listed species or “destroy or adversely modify” any designated critical habitat for that species, EPA helps administer the Endangered Species Act through its Endangered Species Protection Program.
